Common Features in Blink Home Security Cameras

All of the Blink cameras come with some pretty standard features and work with Amazon Alexa. The Blink cameras come with two-way talk, 1080p image resolution, and color night vision. These cameras have a narrower field of view at 110 degrees compared to other smart home security cameras, which most commonly fall around 140 degrees to 160 degrees, like the Google Nest Cam or the Arlo Pro 4. Blink cameras are very discreet as they are small in size and can fit in the palm of your hand. They are also well known to have an impressive two-year battery life by using only two AA batteries, making them a popular choice for energy efficiency and low-maintenance home security cameras.

Installation of Blink Cameras

All three of Blink’s pocket-size cameras are super easy to install. These Blink cameras are practically ready to use out of the box. The box comes with one Blink camera, one Blink sync module (all except the Blink Mini), one plastic mount, two screws for mounting, and convenient battery replacement equipment to open and close the back of the Blink camera. It comes with intuitive on-screen instructions; you can then set up the devices, which would take around 10 minutes to connect to the Wi-Fi and the Blink Home Monitoring app.

The Blink Indoor and the Blink Outdoor are wireless security cameras that do not require any plugs or wires, so you can place them just about anywhere in the home. The only wired device is the Blink Mini, which requires wired installation instead of a battery and uses an optional swivel stand for easy positioning. It is easy to hide the Blink cameras as they are all pretty small in size and very lightweight so intruders will not easily find them.

Blink Home Monitoring App

The Blink app is simple to use, intuitive, and comes with many notable features. Here are a few features that we love:

  • Adjustable motion sensor sensitivity to lessen false or unwanted alerts
  • Customizable activity zones by inches using a grid
  • Adjustable volume for the camera’s audio two-way talk
  • Adjustable infrared LEDs and video brightness to make sure that the camera’s night vision is glare-free and clear.
  • Temperature detection so you can monitor the temperature where each Blink camera is placed.

Blink Indoor Camera

This small and lightweight Blink Indoor camera is a solid choice for the price you are paying, as it comes with all the features we expect in a decent camera like motion detection, high-resolution video recording, and two-way audio. The only downside is that it only works with Alexa and the night vision is not too great. But for a wire-free security camera with long battery life and good video quality, especially for small areas like dorms, home offices, and other small rooms.

Blink Mini Camera

Blink Mini Camera

Being Blink’s smallest home security camera, the Blink Mini might not look like much, but it is a powerful security camera. If you think the Blink Indoor is small, wait till you see the Blink Mini. At 5 centimeters tall, the Blink Mini isn’t bigger than a pill bottle. The Blink Mini is a good little camera to place just about anywhere in the house, especially if you do not want your security camera to be too noticeable. It is also commonly used as a nanny cam to monitor young family members or even fur babies. The Blink Mini does a great job taking care of the basics, and like all Blink cameras, it has very clear video and audio. It doesn’t need any batteries but requires a power cord to run it.

Blink Mini Camera’s Features

  • Two-way audio The audio in The Blink Mini is clear and almost as good as listening to someone in person.

  • Night vision The video from the Blink Mini is clear, but faces tend to get blurry at more than a few feet away from the camera.
  • Wired Installation It comes with a power cord, but it can be detached from its swivel stand. The Blink mini is slightly less flexible than the Blink Indoor and Blink Outdoor cameras, but batteries aren’t needed.
  • Motion Sensitivity Blink cameras are generally quite sensitive when compared to others in the market, but users can adjust and set motion zones and up to two privacy zones using the sensitivity slider in the Blink Home Monitoring app.
  • Self-Monitoring With the Blink app, users can conveniently switch between checking live view and looking back at the day’s footage history.
  • Amazon Alexa Integration Home monitoring can be done using voice commands through supported Alexa-enabled devices. Unfortunately, all of Blink’s battery-powered cameras do not work with Apple HomeKit or Google Assistant.
Blink Mini Camera

The Blink Mini camera is a solid little corded camera that can fit just about anywhere. While it might be compact and limited in features, the Blink Home Monitor app gives you plenty of custom setting options, giving you the same flexibility and convenience as the other two security cameras – Blink Outdoor cam and Blink Indoor. The Blink Mini operates with a power cord instead of batteries but has most of the same features as the other two cameras, like motion detection, 1080p resolution, two-way audio, and night vision. The Blink Mini is a good option for an indoor security camera at this price point.

Blink Video Storage Options

Blink offers a free 30-day trial of the Blink Subscription Plan with any purchase of a Blink security camera. After the 30-day trial, the basic plan costs $3 per month and a premium option for $10 per month. The Blink basic subscription plan is priced competitively with these included:

  • Up to 60 days of unlimited Cloud storage
  • Automatic recording when motion is detected
  • Share and save video clips
  • Capture photos of whatever the camera is viewing

You can still get motion alerts and view live streams without a subscription plan through the Blink Monitoring app. There is also an option of storing the videos in local storage if you get the Blink Sync Module 2. The Sync Module can save the footage for up to 10 Blink cameras, and there aren’t any monthly storage fees as it stores your footage in a USB flash drive. It doesn’t take up a lot of space like the NVR or DVR local storage boxes. The Blink Sync Module 2 comes included with every purchase of a Blink camera, but you can always buy the sync module separately.

Our Final Verdict

Blink home security cameras offer a hassle-free experience at an affordable price while delivering reliable motion sensitivity alerts and good image and audio quality. All of Blink’s security cameras are affordable and do not use a lot of energy; they are easy to install and discreet. The Blink app also gives you a lot of flexibility to tweak and adjust settings like motion sensitivity and activity zones.

Best of all, these tiny but powerful Blink cameras can be placed just about anywhere. Homeowners with existing smart home devices might be disappointed by the fact that Blink cameras work only with Alexa and are unable to integrate with non-Amazon devices. Blink security cameras aren’t the fanciest in the market and come with a limited viewing angle and poor night vision.

But, if you are looking for a basic camera system for video surveillance that is low maintenance and would not burn a hole in your pocket, the Blink cameras are an ideal choice for you and your home.
