Table of Contents

Reolink, a security company launched in 2009 makes some of the best mid-priced security cameras and diverse smart home security camera system selection. Its main aim is to deliver high quality cameras at the best value. With its diverse selection of smart home security cameras like wire free cameras, rechargeable battery-powered cameras, Wi-Fi cameras, PoE IP cameras, and solar panel cameras, there are plenty of options to meet the different needs of each home.

While Reolink products do not quite offer the latest and greatest features, they offer customers affordable yet reliable cameras with notable features like starlight night vision, multiple power options, and solar panel compatibility. Although it is a lesser-known global security brand, there is a real potential with its impressive list of products to upset bigger names like Google Nest, Ring, and Arlo.

Reolink’s mission is to make every home or office more secure and comfortable. Check out our full breakdown as we delve into the technology, features, highs, lows, and in-betweens of Reolink’s security cameras.

Some of the Features Reolink Cameras Have to Offer

The good thing about Reolink cameras is that each model type and version has progressively more features. So every newer version of the same model would have better functionalities and features. Although, Reolink has been slow to roll out certain features when compared to other cameras from bigger brands.

For instance, Reolink cameras use just about every type of storage there is in the market. The minimum storage offered for a Reolink security camera would be an SD card or cloud storage subscription, but certain models work with FTP servers and NVRs.

All Reolink cameras are standalone devices and work independently through the Reolink app. There is no need for a security system to use Reolink’s cameras. Nearly all Reolink cameras use event-based recording where the camera recordings will be motion-triggered. We would introduce more features as we dive deeper into each security camera option Reolink has to offer.

Installation for Reolink Cameras

Installation varies within the different Reolink security camera models you choose. Installation for some of the models can be as simple as using a QR code, while others might require simple mounting and a power source. Most Reolink models are battery powered cameras that are wire-free, using only rechargeable batteries or solar panels, so there’s no need to worry about messy installation or drilling any holes. A few other cameras would require some wall-fished ethernet cables. Usually, installation is a breeze and no professional installation is required. However, if you encounter any issues, Reolink has an informative FAQ section as well as Reolink support and customer service to help you out.

Reolink Storage Options

Most Reolink camera models come with two common storage options; a micro SD card slot or a subscription to Reolink’s cloud plan. This comes in handy if you need to record and store footage triggered by motion detection.

To top it off, the Reolink system offers a basic cloud storage plan for free for 30 days. It comes with 1GB of storage space and a 7-day video history for one Reolink camera. If you require more storage space, you can upgrade to a paid plan with no contracts and no long-term commitment needed.

Having local video storage on a microSD card is more affordable when compared to the cloud storage option. Storing on a microSD card doesn’t require any internet connection to save video footage, which is useful for rural locations with unstable connections or slow internet access.

If privacy is of concern, storing videos in a micro SD card would be more desirable because the video footage will not be available online unless you view them remotely using the Reolink app. You can also insert the memory card into an adapter on your computer to download the videos. Having said that, these storage options are useful but optional as the Reolink cameras will still function without any storage capabilities.

The Reolink app allows you to control your storage and recording settings. It allows you to customize when a recording should be done or if it is using movement detection. You can also enable the overwrite function to delete older videos to make room for new footage automatically. The app also lets you select your preferred video and image quality setting to help increase storage longevity.

Final Thoughts

With plenty of customizations, excellent feature standards, affordable pricing, and reliable equipment, we think that overall, Reolink products are a great option to consider when it comes to smart home security cameras. You get to enjoy features like night vision, two-way audio, sirens, and power options using an add-on solar panel at a reasonable price.

Although the brand isn’t as well-known as the bigger brands like Nest, Arlo, Ring, and Wyze and lacks high-tech options such as geofencing and person-detection, the price makes up for it.
